Tampa Swimmers Move Into Top Five at NCAA Championships
DALLAS - The University of Tampa women's swimming team continued its hot start at the 2012 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships as it now stands at fifth overall through two full days. The Spartan men are also in competition at 14th in the nation.
The Spartan women have logged 103 points through the first 20 events as Wayne State is the overall leader on the women's side with 261. UT's men have 46 points as Drury's 248 lead all men's teams.
Following the morning prelims, Tampa's women's 200 Free Relay team took the consolation to place ninth with a time of 1:35.23. The Spartans in on the relay team were Erin Plachy, Kristine Kassl, Lindsay Calimer and Heather Glenday.
In the following event, Tampa's men claimed eighth place in the 200 Free Relay from the team of David Humphrey, Felipe Manzo, Jeff Fiore and Derek Krell. UT's time was 1:22.44 in the relay.
Calimer then won the consolation heat of the 100 Fly to claim ninth place with a time of 55.76. Norbert Kovacs was 11th in the 100 Fly on the men's side, finishing in 48.89 as he was third in the consolation.
Glenday continued her NCAA success a day after her school record time in the 1,000 Free. The sophomore who is already a two-time All-American finished fifth in the 200 Free with a time of 1:50.34.
In the final event of day two, UT's women were second in the consolation to place 10th in the 400 Medley Relay. The team of Hilary Stetekluh, Alex Hipolito, Calimer and Plachy notched a time of 3:50.78.
The Spartans were 12th in the men's 400 Medley Relay as Berk Kahraman, Fiore, Kovacs and Manzo clocked a 3:19.40 mark.
Day three of competition at the championships will include the finals in the 500 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 200 Fly and 800 Free Relay. The event will last through Saturday.
