Tampa Enjoys Successful Second Day at NSU Invitational
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams achieved several NCAA qualifying times in the second day of the Nova Southeastern Invitational, heading into Sunday's competition.
The Spartan men now stand in second place with 434 points, with Florida Southern clinging to a small lead at 440.5. Tampa's women are third with 397.5, within striking distance of Nova Southeastern (434) and Florida International (412.5).
A total of six men's teams and eight from the women's side are among the competition. The event is being hosted by Nova Southeastern.
Tampa's 200 Free Relay of Khalid Aldaboos, David Humphrey, Felipe Manzo and Derek Krell (1:21.69) had an NCAA B cut time, as its 400 Medley Relay group of Karl Burdis, Kevin Doran, Norbert Kovacs and Humphrey (3:19.22) also took first place with an NCAA time.
In the 50 Free, Aldaboos took first-place with a qualifying time of 20.74. Felipe Manzo was second at 20.92 as Humphrey (20.99) and Krell (21.13) also had B cut showings in the same event.
Kovacs also notched a B qualifying time in the 500 Free after being clocked at 4:28.40. Scott Nocco swam the 200 IM in 1:53.72, as Zane Hranac finished ahead of his Spartan teammate with a time of 1:52.65 as both made the cut.
The women started with a second-place NCAA B cut time from the 200 Free Relay team of Erin Plachy, Kylie Piche, Kristine Kassl and Heather Glenday (1:36.39).
In the women's 500 Free race, a total of four Spartans turned in B cut times, led by Glenday's showing of 5:01.39. Also qualifying were Kassl (5:04.67), Briana Murphy (5:05.65) and Alexandria Greenhill (5:07.29).
Alex Hipolito's second-place finish in the 200 IM was good for a B cut, coming in with a showing of 2:07.35. In the 50 Free, Plachy and Piche finished second and third with respective times of 23.91 and 24.05, both of which earned a B time.
The Spartan women capped off the second day of competition with a B cut time in a second-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay from Allison Noe, Hipolito, Catherine Parker and Plachy (3:54.98). The third-place Spartan team of Hilary Stetekluh, Jamie Pappanastos, Emily Grams and Piche also made the cut at 3:56.34.
