Spartan Men and Women Both in Contention Heading to Final Day of NSU Invite
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's and women's swimming teams are both in second place after day three at the Nova Southeastern Invitational. Monday will mark the final day of events.
On the women's side, the Spartans now have 725.5 points and trail just Nova Southeastern's 748.5. Florida Southern (852.5) is the top team on the men's side, with Tampa well within striking distance at 817.
A total of six men's teams and eight from the women's side are among the competition. The event is being hosted by Nova Southeastern.
Tampa's women began the race with a second-place showing from its 200 Medley Relay team as it had an NCAA B cut time. Allison Noe, Alex Hipolito, Catherine Parker and Erin Plachy (1:47.07) made up the team as the group of Hilary Stetekluh, Michelle Walcker, Emily Grams and Kylie Piche (1:48.02) were third with a qualifying time.
Also swimming to NCAA B times for UT were Hipolito in the 400 IM (third, 4:28.49), Grams in the 100 Fly (second, 57.18), Heather Glenday in the 200 Free (third, 1:52.08), Alexandria Greenhill in the 200 Free (fifth, 1:53.35), Briana Murphy in the 200 Free (1:54.62), Kristine Kassl in the 200 Free (1:55.50) and Hipolito in the 100 Breast (third, 1:06.09)
The Spartan men began Sunday's finals with a first-place finish and NCAA b cut time in the 200 Medley Relay from Karl Burdis, Kevin Doran, Norbert Kovacs and Khalid Aldaboos (1:31.07). Tampa was also third in the event with a B time from Joshua Werner, Jonathan Wilks, David Humphrey and Felipe Manzo (1:31.26).
Zane Hranac won the 400 IM with a qualifying clip of 4:00.58. Spartans earning B times were Kovacs in the 100 Fly (second, 49.03), Werner in the 100 Fly (fourth, 49.95), Humphrey in the 100 Fly (50.17), Derek Krell in the 200 Free (seventh, 1:41.00), Jeremy Parker in the 200 Free (ninth, 1:41.97), Doran in the 100 Breast (second, 56.84), Burdis in the 100 Back (second, 48.98) and Werner in the 100 Back (sixth, 50.55).
