Four Events, Four Meet Records on Day One of SSC Swimming Championship

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The 2013 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championship is off to a fast start at the Long Center in Clearwater, Florida. On the opening night of competition on Wednesday, all four events saw new meet records set.

After day one, Nova Southeastern leads on both the women's and men's side.

The Shark women tallied 121 points to take the early advantage. Tampa is second with 77 points. Florida Southern is third with 69 points. Saint Leo is fourth with 44 points, followed closely by Lynn with 41. Florida Tech is sixth with 36 points, and Rollins is seventh with 25.

The NSU men totaled 113 points to take the lead. Florida Southern is second with 89. Tampa is third with 64, followed by Florida Tech and Saint Leo tied in fourth with 54. Rollins is sixth with 39 points.

Florida Southern's Heather Burns won the women's 1,000-yard freestyle with a new meet record time of 10:13.45.

Nova Southeastern's Oskar Nordstrand won the men's 1,000-yard freestyle. Nordstrand topped his own meet record in winning the event with a mark of 9:10.59. The time also automatically qualified Nordstrand for the NCAA Division II Championship.

Tampa won the women's 800-yard freestyle relay in a race that saw all three medal winners post NCAA automatic qualifying times. The Spartans took gold in a meet record 7:24.90. Swimming the event for UT were Alexandra Hipolito, Alexandria Greenhill, Kristine Kassl, and Heather Glenday.

Nova Southeastern finished second (7:26.05) in the race, and Florida Southern placed third (7:26.54) en route to their NCAA automatic qualifier marks.

Florida Southern won the men's 800 freestyle relay with a meet record time of 6:33.37. The Moccasins automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II meet with their winning time. Jeb Halfacre, Luis Rojas, Allan Gutierrez, and Stephen Swan combined for the win for FSC.
