TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa tennis team made quick work of the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in a Monday afternoon match.

  • The Spartans registered a clean sweep of doubles play, grabbing a 3-0 lead.
  • The number-one duo of Caroline Lozo and Emily Hewland blanked their opponent by an 8-0 tally.
  • Both the two and three teams defeated UPRM 8-2. The two team included Lilley Nice and Maddie Stephens while the three team was Ava Sowell and Danielle Beyes.
  • Al DuFaux's squad enjoyed the same success in singles play, winning all six events.
  • Lozo took the number-one contest by scores of 6-0, 6-1.
  • Hewland's victory at number two came by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
  • Freshman Nice blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at three.
  • A straight-set victory was also turned in by Stephens at four, by scores of 6-3, 6-2.
  • Sowell received the victory as her opponent retired in the first game.
  • Beyes recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at number six.


  • This marks the third 9-0 score of the 2017 season for Tampa.
  • The match goes down as a South Region contest for the two teams.
  • Stephens leads the way with 12 singles wins as she is 12-2 on the season. The sophomore ranks No. 14 in school history with 23 career singles wins.
  • Nice and Sowell are each 11-2 in their freshman campaigns.
  • Nice and Stephens are 12-2 from  their number two doubles position.
  • Beyes and Sowell are 11-2 at three doubles.
  • Hewland is tied for eighth in program history with 24 doubles victories.

UP NEXT: Tampa gets back on the court on Tuesday in a critical Sunshine State Conference matchup against No. 29 Saint Leo University. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m., in Tampa.
