#2 Tampa Races Past Eckerd
Tampa, Fla. - The second-ranked University of Tampa volleyball team recorded a 3-1 victory over Sunshine State Conference foe Eckerd. The Spartans improve to 23-1 on the season and 9-1 in the SSC as the Tritons fall to 16-10 and 3-6 in league play.
After taking the first game by a score of 30-22, the Spartans dropped game two 30-28 in a game that was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. Tampa came back from game two with a dominant 30-15 game three win. The Spartans finished off the victory with a 30-25 game four victory.
Katelen Dixon turned in an excellent performance for Tampa, registering 18 kills which was good for a .444 hitting percentage. Dixon added a double-double as she also totaled 13 digs. Alisha Green also added 18 kills as Erin Clark (14) Stephanie Rivera (11) were also in double figures in the category. Gabriela Saade accounted for 57 of Tampa's 65 assists.
The Spartans also recorded 12 blocks, compared to four by Eckerd. Five Spartans recorded multiple blocks as Clark led the team with seven. Rivera added four while Green and Danielle MacDonald had two apiece.
Eckerd was led by Lydee Benoit, who had a team-high 17 kills and 16 digs. Kristy Busse added 15 digs while Shannon Ruby had 14.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday at 4:00 pm when they play host to Lynn.
