No. 2 Tampa To Host Homecoming, Pair of Opponents This Weekend
TAMPA, Fla. - After improving its record to a perfect 21-0 with Tuesday night's victory, the No. 2 University of Tampa volleyball team is set to host two Sunshine State Conference opponents this weekend at the Bob Martinez Athletic Center.
The Spartans will face off against Barry University (9-10, 1-7 SSC) on Friday night, followed by a Saturday afternoon match with Lynn University (11-10, 4-4 SSC). Tampa will attempt to improve its streak of winning 26 straight sets.
UT is coming off a quick victory over Flagler College on Tuesday evening. Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week Danielle Selkridge posted four blocks and eight kills in the game, improving her hitting percentage to a nation leading .583.
Tampa also had solid performances from junior Jessica Yingling and senior Camille Hanks. Yingling led the team with nine kills, while Hanks came off the bench to hit 8-10 in kills.
Barry University is currently eighth in the Sunshine State standings. The Buccaneers are looking for its second conference win and will rely on middle hitter Tania Torres. She leads the team with 225 kills this season.
The Fighting Knights of Lynn University may post more of a threat for the Saturday afternoon matchup. Lynn sits just above .500 in the standings, but are coming off three consecutive losses.
All students are encouraged to come to the game Friday night as the University of Tampa Homecoming King and Queen will be announced. The ceremony will take place between the second and third sets of the Barry contest.
Tickets will be available at the gate for $5 (adults) and $3 (students and senior citizens). UT students and faculty/staff will be admitted free with a valid Spartan ID.
