Tampa Tallies Pair of Wins in the Mile-High City
DENVER, Colo. - Continuing their success on the road, the No. 3 University of Tampa volleyball team rolls passed both Abilene Christian University and the No. 21 Colorado School of the Mines for a pair of three-set victories.
The dual sweeps push the Spartan tally to 5-1 on the season, while the Wildcats dip to 3-3 on their 2012 campaign. The CSM Orediggers drop to a 4-2 record as the UT squad takes their division in the Colorado Premier Challenge.
Junior Holly Reschke grounded 22 kills on the day while reigning Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week Danielle Selkridge followed with 15 kills. Freshman dynamo Marissa Lisenbee and senior Jessica Yingling each amassed 14 kills on the day.
Outside hitter Yingling led the defense with 23 digs for the two matches with Libero Frances Cardenas and Sloane Bâby notching 19 and 17 respectively. Setter Kahley Patrick kept the offensive tempo with 66 assists but also contributed on defense with 17 digs.
The Spartans swept their first Colorado Premier opponent in Abilene Christian(25-17, 25-10, 25-22), as Reschke baffled the Wildcat defense, posting an errorless 9-for-11 attack at a .818 attack percentage in two frames of action.
Selkridge tallied six blocks in the first match, also picking up five kills in the win . Freshman Lisenbee amassed six kills and two blocks in her two sets of actions while fellow freshman Megan Heffron made her collegiate debut, notching four kills for the UT squad.
Defensive duo Yingling and Bâby led with 10 and nine digs respectively as senior Yingling also walled four ACU attacks. Sophomore Patrick assisted 29 Spartan attacks and eight digs in the three set victory.
The second match saw a clash of two nationally ranked programs as the third ranked Spartans swept the Orediggers (25-20, 25-18, 28-26) who hold the 21 spot on the AVCA weekly release.
Reschke and Selkridge powered the Spartan barrage as the duo spun 13 and 10 kills respectively, the latter posting four blocks in the three set match. Lisenbee swung 8-for-17 without committing an error, good for a match leading .471 attack percentage.
Junior libero Cardenas tied with Yingling 13 digs each while sophomore Patrick set 37 Spartan attacks to commence pool play for the tournament.
