Tampa Improves to 2-0 in SSC Play with Win over Saint Leo

TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 1 University of Tampa
Spartans defeated the visiting Saint Leo University Lions by a 3-0
score (25-20, 25-17, 25-19), Friday evening from the Martinez
Center. The victory marks the Spartans' 38th consecutive Sunshine
State Conference victory, as they have not lost a conference
contest since 2011.
Saint Leo came out of the gate thirsting for victory,
scorching three quick points in set one for an early lead. From
there on out, however, both teams battled point for point until the
Spartans clinched a 25-20 set win.
The second set of the match began with a point in Tampa's
favor, and the pace was set from there. Despite a few runs by the
visiting Lions, the Spartans cranked out a 25-17 set victory for a
2-0 lead.
With a lead in their favor, the Spartans returned to the court
for set three ready to pounce, defeating the Lions by a 25-19 score
and taking home the match.
As a team, Tampa earned a .430 attack percentage in the 3-0
victory, with junior outside hitter Berkley Whaley recording a
game-high 13 kills. The All-American currently ranks twelfth in
the nation for kills per set.
Offensively, junior Marissa Lisenbee tacked on ten kills,
while senior setter Kahley Patrick guided the team to success with
a total of 40 assists on the night.
Defensively, libero Kasey Reynolds and Kahley Patrick led the
Spartans with ten and eight digs, respectively. Tampa held Saint
Leo to a .222 attack percentage, forcing 22 total errors.
The Spartans will wrap up weekend play with a late afternoon
Saturday matchup against Florida Southern College tomorrow. The 4
p.m. Sunshine State Conference contest will occur at the Martinez
Center on the campus of the University of Tampa.
