Four Spartans Claim All-SSC Volleyball Honors
Seniors Berkley Whaley and Jessica Wagner were named Sunshine State Conference Co-Players of the Year while libero Logan Holanchock picked up Freshman of the Year honors. Senior Marissa Lisenbee repeats as an All-SSC First Team selection.
MELBOURNE, Fla. - Twenty-two student-athletes are recognized as All-Sunshine State Conference for the 2015 season. SSC Champions, University of Tampa, boast seven awards including Co-Players of the Year, Jessica Wagner & Berkley Whaley. Voting for the team was conducted among the league's volleyball coaches.
Seniors Wagner and Whaley were named Sunshine State Conference Co-Players of the Year. Whaley earns the accolade for the third consecutive season, joining Cindy Yuan (Barry, 1996-98) as the only athletes awarded SSC Volleyball Player of the Year three times. Wagner and Whaley are the third pair of athletes to share the award (1998 & 2000 and it is the first time teammates have shared the honor.
Libero Logan Holanchock has been selected Freshman of the Year. Holanchock is the first Freshman of the Year from Tampa since 2011 (Kahley Patrick).
Whaley and Wagner, along with teammate Marissa Lisenbee, repeat as first team selections from 2014. The remaining four members of the senior laden team are receiving First Team All-SSC awards for the first time.
Outside hitter Whaley is hitting at an even .300 on the season, notching 428 kills for the Spartans. Defensively, the three-time SSC Defensive Player of the Week has 337 digs, good for second on the team and ranks first among all outside hitters in the conference. The St. Petersburg, Fla. native sits 10th all-time in career kills with 1305 and is just 11 shy of passing former SSC Player of the Year Melissa Vanderhall at ninth.
Middle blocker Wagner boasts the best attack percentage in the conference, hitting at an efficient .419 clip with 323 kills. The Cape Coral, Fla. native leads the team in blocks with 121 on the season, a mark which ranks first in the SSC.
Libero Holanchock anchored the back row for Tampa in her first collegiate season. The freshman has 573 digs this season to lead the squad, averaging 5.12 digs per set. The St. Augustine, Fla. native is the first UT student athlete to surpass 500 digs since Julie Howlett posted 539 in the 2010 season. Holanchock leads Tampa on serve with 26 aces in the 2015 campaign.
Right side hitter Lisenbee is having the best season of her career, posting season bests in kills with 381 and digs with 180. The 180 digs this season is more than her previous three combined, as the Seminole, Fla. native is making plays in each rotation. The senior is second on the team in blocks with 84 total, another career-mark to repeat her first team selection from a season ago.
