Bio
Logan Wells is entering his fourth year as the Head Women’s Cross Country and Track Coach at The University of Tampa after joining the program in June 2022. He was selected following a national search and brings collegiate coaching experience from four universities.
In his time as leader of the Women’s program, Wells has helped the Spartans rewrite their record boards as his teams have set 11 school records and added 71 names to Top-10 lists. In Cross Country, the women’s program has qualified for the NCAA DII National Championships each of the three years he has been at the helm.
Most recently, Wells was named Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year following a dominant victory at the Inaugural SSC Track Championships. The Spartans outscored the next closest competitor by over 40 points and boasted the Athlete of the Meet in Junior sprints star, Allie Murphy. In addition, Murphy and teammate Campbell Caldwell were named SSC Sprinter and Distance Runner of the Year respectively. In total, the 2025 season saw five school records and three athletes finish in the top-40 of their respective events nationally.
During the fall of 2024, Wells helped the Spartans qualify for their third consecutive NCAA DII National Cross Country Championship with a second-place finish in the south region. He coached five athletes to All-Region honors, highlighted by a 9th place finish from Junior Lindsey Volkman. He also mentored SSC Freshman of the Year, Hannah Diete and SSC Freshman of the Meet, Mary Richmond as part of a national-caliber recruiting class.
The 2024 track campaign was a historic one for the Spartans as they set seven school records and achieved four NCAA DII provisional marks. Allie Murphy became the first sprints athlete in school history to achieve a provisional mark by running 1:01.91 in the 400 hurdles at the UCF Knights Invite. This was followed by three more provisional marks from her teammates, the most in a single season in almost a decade.
In Wells’s second cross county season, the team earned its first Sunshine State Conference Championship since 2020. The Spartans scored 32 points and boasted five All-SSC performers. They were led by Senior Aspen Gordon who was named SSC Runner of the Meet and SSC Runner of the Year. In addition, Gordon placed 62nd at the NCAA DII National Championships which was the highest placing for a Spartan runner since 2019. Wells received his first nod as SSC Coach of the Year for his efforts.
In his first season, Wells guided the cross country team to a close second place finish in the 2022 Sunshine State Conference Championships. The Spartans then followed up with a third place finish at the NCAA South Regional Championships to qualify for the NCAA DII National Championships for the 15th time in program history, its first since 2019. Emma Skinner was named SSC Freshman of the Meet while her classmate, Katelyn Dietrick, was named SSC Freshman of the Year.
Wells accepted a position as the Head Cross Country/Track and Field Coach at NCAA Division III Spalding University in March 2021, where he led the program to three school records in track. He also coached two SLIAC individual conference champions with two SLIAC Newcomer of the Year awards.
Among his accomplishments during his short stint at Spalding include 14 top-five program finishes among cross country, track, and field events. He also coached his runners to 14 SLIAC all-conference awards, including five first-teamers and nine on the second team.
Prior to Spalding, Wells spent two years as the head cross country and assistant track field coach at Bluffton University. In his inaugural season, he guided the Beavers women’s team to a fourth-place finish in the HCAC Championships and placed two runners on the HCAC All-Conference First Team. In addition, the men’s team placed 6th and both teams were recognized by the USTFCCCA for their performance in the classroom making the Academic All-America list. On the track, Wells helped guide his runners to seven all-conference performances, including a conference champion in the women’s 10,000m run.
Prior to his time at Bluffton, Wells spent two years at Otterbein University and his alma mater of Hanover College. As an assistant coach, Wells helped coordinate practices, recruit athletes and manage on-campus events. Wells also has a background in hosting events through helping Hanover College host the 2013 NCAA DIII Cross Country National Championships, as well as through coordinating races with Columbus Running Company in Columbus, Ohio.
As an athlete, Wells is ranked fifth all-time in Hanover school history over the 8-kilometer distance. He has also trained and raced with the CRC (Columbus Running Company) Elite team from 2015-18 and owns a personal best in the marathon distance of 2:26:18. In addition, he competed in the 2016 USATF half-marathon championships.
