No. 1 Tampa Opens Title Defense With Doubleheader Sweep of Georgia College
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans, two-time defending national champions, opened the 2026 season in dominant fashion on Friday afternoon, sweeping a season-opening doubleheader against the Georgia College Bobcats at John Kurtz Field. Tampa cruised to a 15-1 victory in Game 1 before securing a 3-1 win in Game 2, to conclude the weather-shortened series.
GAME 1
No. 1 Tampa 15, Georgia College 1
Tampa wasted no time asserting control in the opener, scoring in each of the first four innings and never allowing the Bobcats to build momentum.
The Spartans jumped out early behind run-producing at-bats from Jordan Evans, Jesse Ponce, and Brayden Woodburn, plating four runs in the first two frames and steadily extending the lead throughout the afternoon. Tampa finished with 15 runs on 13 hits, while forcing five Georgia College errors.
Gunnett Carlson delivered one of the standout performances of the day, going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs scored, and three RBIs. Carlson's two-run triple in the ninth inning capped Tampa's offensive explosion.
Woodburn added a dynamic all-around effort, finishing 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBIs, and three stolen bases, consistently pressuring the defense. Ponce drove in two runs, while Jake Books and Jhoander Irigoyen each contributed RBIs and reached base multiple times.
Tampa's lineup depth was evident throughout, as 11 Spartans reached base, including key contributions from Jack Martinez, Dennis McCaffery, A.J. Graham, and Walker Vanecek.
On the mound, the Spartans were equally dominant. Robert Satin earned the start and set the tone with 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four. The bullpen trio of Alex Laiche, Oscar Hernandez, and Kenney Robinson combined to allow just one run over the final five innings, striking out four and limiting Georgia College to five hits.
GAME 2
No. 1 Tampa 3, Georgia College 1
The nightcap developed into a pitching duel, but Tampa once again delivered timely offense and leaned on its bullpen depth to complete the sweep.
The Spartans struck first in the opening inning when Brayden Woodburn lined an RBI single to score Jordan Evans. Tampa added insurance runs later in the game on RBI efforts from Jhoander Irigoyen and Jake Books, finishing with three runs on eight hits.
Evans continued his strong opening day, going 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base. Woodburn drove in another run, while Javi Soto recorded two hits, and Books finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a sacrifice.
Tampa's pitching staff delivered another strong performance. John Luke Glanton earned the win, throwing 4.0 shutout innings with six strikeouts, allowing just three hits. B.J. Bailey followed with four strong innings, surrendering only one run, before Sammy Beir closed the door in the ninth to earn the save.
Defensively, the Spartans were flawless in Game 2, committing no errors while turning in clean, efficient innings behind the pitching staff.
