Home Opener Goes to Tampa Behind Masterpiece By Robert Satin
TAMPA, Fla. - The top‑ranked University of Tampa baseball team opened its 2026 home schedule in emphatic fashion on Friday night, rolling past the University of Montevallo by a score of 8–0 behind dominant pitching and an early offensive surge.
The night began with celebration, as the Spartans honored their 2025 National Championship team in a pregame ceremony and unveiled a new state‑of‑the‑art videoboard courtesy of UT Hall of Famer and alumnus Fred Pollock, drawing loud applause from the crowd of 583.
Once the game began, Tampa wasted no time asserting its No. 1 ranking. In the first inning, Jesse Ponce reached on an infield single before Brayden Woodburn followed with a base hit to left. Jake Books then delivered the opening blow, driving a two‑run double to deep center to score both runners. Moments later, Walker Vanecek added an RBI single to right, capping a three‑run frame fueled by five Spartan hits.
Tampa added to its lead in the third when Jack Martinez ripped a double down the left‑field line and came around to score on Javi Soto's RBI single to center, which was aided by a defensive miscue that allowed Soto to advance further on the play.
The Spartans' biggest swing of the night came an inning later. After Jordan Evans was hit by a pitch, Ponce launched a towering two‑run homer to deep center, stretching the lead to 6–0 and punctuating a standout night for the junior shortstop.
Tampa continued to capitalize on Montevallo's mistakes in the fifth, as wild pitches allowed Maddox King and Evans to score before Books forced in another run with a bases‑loaded walk, giving him his third RBI of the game.
While the offense built a comfortable lead, Tampa's pitching staff was overpowering. Robert Satin delivered one of his most dominant collegiate outings, striking out 12 over 5.0 innings while allowing only one hit and no walks. Satin struck out the side in the first inning and faced just one batter over the minimum across his five innings of work. The junior lefty improved to 2-0 on the season.
Relievers Alex Laiche and Tobin Moran completed the shutout with four combined innings of three‑hit baseball, ensuring Montevallo never mounted a serious threat. The Spartan defense was equally sharp, posting a clean sheet with no errors and turning key double plays in the middle innings to erase baserunners. Behind the plate, Jhoander Irigoyen anchored the effort with 13 putouts while helping guide the staff to 14 total strikeouts.
Offensively, Ponce finished 2‑for‑4 with three runs scored, a home run, and two RBI, while Books reached base three times and drove in three. Martinez went 2‑for‑2 with a walk before exiting defensively, and King added two hits and a run scored. Tampa collected 11 hits in all and drew seven walks while controlling the game from the opening pitch.
