Satin Continues Mastery as Spartans Take Series Opener
TAMPA, Fla. — The No. 3 University of Tampa baseball team opened its weekend series with a 4–0 shutout victory over Davenport on Friday night at Tampa Baseball Field.
The Spartans improved to 17–3 behind a dominant outing from Robert Satin, who tossed seven scoreless innings, and a timely early offense that provided all the support Tampa needed. The Spartans scored in each of the first three innings, played clean defense, and limited Davenport to five hits in their third shutout win of the season.
How It Happened
Tampa struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on early traffic. Gunnett Carlson worked a two‑out walk and advanced to third before Jake Books lined an RBI single to right field to give the Spartans a 1–0 lead.
The Spartans added to the advantage in the second. Javi Soto doubled to right‑center, and Jack Martinez was hit by a pitch to put two runners in scoring position. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up, Carlson delivered a two‑run triple to right field, scoring Martinez and Soto to extend the lead to 3–0.
Tampa manufactured its final run in the third inning. Walker Vanecek walked and advanced to third on a single by Soto, and Jesse Ponce grounded out to second base, allowing Vanecek to score and push the margin to 4–0.
From there, Satin took over. The right‑hander scattered three hits across seven innings, striking out nine while allowing just two walks. Davenport threatened in the fifth by loading the bases with two outs, but Satin induced a groundout to escape the inning unscathed.
The bullpen closed it out cleanly. Luke Fikar worked 1.1 scoreless innings before Josiah Velazquez struck out both batters he faced in the ninth to secure the shutout.
