Spartans Defeat Nation's No. 2 Team at Southeastern Collegiate
VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of Tampa men's golf team posted a strong showing in one of the deepest and most competitive fields of the spring, finishing T‑12 (+7) at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate, hosted at the 7,257‑yard Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
Against a lineup featuring 10 nationally ranked teams, Tampa surged in Round 2 with a blistering 280 (–8) before closing the event tied with Sunshine State Conference rival Saint Leo. West Florida (#3) captured the team title at –21, followed closely by #11 Columbus State (–18) and #21 Lincoln Memorial (–16). Tampa's consistency across the first two rounds kept the Spartans within striking distance throughout the tournament.
How It Happened
After opening with a steady 289 (+1), the Spartans fired one of the lowest second rounds in the entire field, a 280 (–8) that vaulted Tampa up the leaderboard. The third round presented more challenging conditions, resulting in a 302 (+14) that brought UT to 871 (+7) overall. Tampa finished ahead of #2 Lee (+10) and matched #15 Saint Leo (+7), adding a valuable résumé marker in a high‑caliber regional field.
Top Tampa Performers
- T-18 – Martín Hurtado (214, –2). Rounds: 72, 66, 76. Hurtado delivered Tampa's best finish, highlighted by an outstanding second‑round 66, one of the lowest scores of the entire tournament. He entered the final round inside the top 10 before securing a top‑20 finish.
- T-34 – Kyle Honer (217, +1). Rounds: 72, 69, 76. Honer provided major momentum in Round 2 with a 69 (–3), marking his lowest round of the week.
- T-48 – Linus Landahl (220, +4). Rounds: 74, 71, 75. Landahl was steady throughout the event, posting a strong even‑par‑adjacent second round to remain inside the top half of the field.
- T-54 – Mohit Balaji (222, +6). Rounds: 73, 74, 75. Balaji showed consistency across all three rounds and delivered a solid final‑round 75.
- T-77 – Carl Gustin (227, +11). Rounds: 72, 78, 77. Gustin opened the week with a 72 before closing out Tampa's scoring lineup.
