LAKELAND, Fla. - Playing their fifth ranked team of the season, the University of Tampa women's lacrosse team fell 19-5 to No. 6 Florida Southern, Saturday afternoon at Bryant Stadium. With the win the Moccasins improve to 13-2, while the Spartans fall to 6-9 on the season.
Florida Southern struck first as Megan Asper scored an unassisted goal to take a 1-0 lead. Morgan Cheripko won the ensuing draw control and netted a free position shot for her 31st goal of the season to even the game at 1-1. Florida Southern scored three straight goals, before Cheripko's shot connected with the back of the cage to cut the deficit to 4-2 with 16:05 left in the first half. The Moccasins scored four unanswered goals to extend their lead to 8-2. Tampa responded as Cheripko netted her fourth hat trick of the season with 9:50 remaining. Florida Southern scored five straight goals to take a 13-3 lead into the break.
Katie Delaney won the opening draw control of the second half and on the ensuing possession Mallory Mays scored an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 13-4. After back-to-back Florida Southern goals, Cheripko found Mays in front of the cage for a goal to cut the deficit to 15-5 with 24:32 remaining. Florida Southern scored four straight goals for the 19-5 final.
Cheripko led the Spartans with three goals, an assist, and five draw controls. Mays netted a pair of goals.
Wylie Cassidy made 13 saves in the cage and picked up a team-high five ground balls. Kirsten Brierley and Hannah Farrow each picked up three ground balls in the contest.
The Spartans will return to action Wednesday, April 16, when they travel to Young Harris, GA to take on Young Harris. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
