Spartans Fall in SSC Championship
LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 6 University of Tampa women's lacrosse team fell to No. 2 Florida Southern, 11–8, on Saturday afternoon at Berend Field. With the result, the Spartans move to 12-5 on the season.
How It Happened
Florida Southern struck first in the opening minutes, but Tampa answered midway through the first quarter as Peyton Howell converted a free-position opportunity to even the score at 1–1 heading into the second.
The Mocs created separation in the second quarter, using a 5–2 run to build a 6–3 halftime lead. Mary Kate Person and Grace Lichtenberger each found the back of the net for Tampa, but Florida Southern's offensive surge proved to be the difference heading into the break.
Florida Southern continued to control momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Tampa 4–1 to extend the lead to 10–4. Person added her second goal of the game during the frame, but the Spartans faced a six-goal deficit entering the final quarter.
Tampa mounted a late push in the fourth, outscoring Florida Southern 4–1. Lichtenberger opened the scoring before Sarah Bette, and Person added back-to-back goals to trim the deficit. Howell added her second goal of the game late, but the rally fell short as the Mocs held on for the 11–8 victory.
Spartan Performances
- Mary Kate Person led the Spartans with a hat trick and an assist for a four-point performance.
- Peyton Howell and Grace Lichtenberger each recorded two goals, while Sarah Bette added a score.
- Savvy Barbosa made 13 saves in goal, keeping Tampa within striking distance throughout the contest.
- Lichtenberger also contributed on the draw, leading the team with five draw controls.
- Tampa held a slight edge in draw controls (11–9) and converted five of nine free-position opportunities.
